What are platelets?
Platelets are small cell fragments in the blood that help control bleeding. They plug small holes in blood vessels and assist in the clotting process. They can only be stored for five days. Platelets are a precious component of blood.
How much time does it take? Who can it help?
The entire plateletpheresis donation takes less than two hours, including interview and donation. By donating you can help premature babies, those battling cancer, aplastic anemia, leukemia, or other deadly diseases.
Who can give and how often?
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds and be in good health. Along with meeting criteria for whole blood donors, they have one other restriction: NO ASPIRIN or anything containing aspirin, or Piroxicam (Feldene) within 36 hours of donating. Your body replenishes your supply of platelets very quickly. You may donate platelets by pheresis as frequently as every three days, but no more than 24 times a year. We suggest donating every two weeks. Blood types AB+, AB-, B+, B-, A+ and A- are the best types for this type of donation.
What can you do?
It is critical that Piedmont Blood Center have a large number of active platelet donors available to meet patient’s needs. You can be sure that your donation is helping a patient with special needs.
